Hi,
Thank you for all the information you have provided on this website, it is very helpful. I was wondering if you realized that you have several misspelled words. It’s so easy to have them if you are the only person working on the material. Generally, you always want to have 1 or 2 other people proof you work to catch any misspelled words. On this page I found a few I wanted to share with you – hopefully this is helpful.

“mentiond” – should be “mentioned”

The word “if” in the top section should be capitalized

“you need that have that basic WordPress install process ready” should be “you need to have the basic WordPress install process ready.”

“we wil go into the creation of a moare ore less static website with a Blog page if you want one” should be “we will go into the creation of a static website with a Blog page if you want one.”

Thanks so much for your valuable information. I am assuming that English may not be your first language? I dont know if you have time or the resources, but you should get someone to edit your text because sometimes its a bit hard to follow what you are saying. But thanks again. If you’re not able to get someone to help you with the editing, I’ll probably still read your site.

@Tessa: Yes you can, install xampp from http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html on your PC or Mac and use that to learn more about WordPress.

You need to create a MySql database and databse user from the xampp page. Then put your WordPress installation files in a new subdirectory in the /htdocs/ directory. You can then access it from the url http://localhost/wordpress-subdir and do the install from there.
P.s. its a basic start but I think you can get the job done!

If you want to know WordPress before doing any istallation you should get a free account on http://www.wordpress.com (your username will be you url, like username.wordpress.com so choose one wisely :-))

I’m so glad I found a site that looks like it might help me. I have a project that I’d like to get started and I want to use WordPress. I have a domain name purchased through GoDaddy, but I haven’t gotten the hosting portion yet. I am wondering, can I download Wordpress and play with it before I continue on- I’d like to get a handle on things before they are live. Thanks,

@M J Marshall: I checked the site again as I always do.
Checked the site in IE, Opera and Firefox and this site looks fine in FF 3.5.1, as you can see here http://wordpress-cms.hummerbie.com/wp-content/uploads/website-in-firefox-3-5-1.png.

So it seems that You might want to check your Firefox settings and possible plugins that could cause the problem you experience.
Or you could have a problem with Flash or JavaScripts.

The Theme used here is Thesis and I haven’t seen any problems with it on any browser or site.

Basically in FF 3.5.1 your site looks just awful: The body width is too narrow and doesn’t adjust to the browser width; the sidebars are too narrow, causing the ad images to overlap the text – I have to use Print Preview just to read the content; the right-hand menu gets hidden by the post image.
Which theme are you using so I can avoid it for my own website?

@milan: I hear you, this site was first set up to show people who are already familiar with WordPress how they could use it for more then just blogging.

You comment made me realize that I need to extend the site to give you (and others) a complete guide on how to setup, configure and organize your content and build your own WordPress website.

The first instance of this site was aimed at showing people how you can change and use WordPress themes to look like a “normal” website.

Thank you for you comment, I is a wake-up call for me :-)
